Bakery in Mazatlan

We’ve talked about many of the things that Mazatlan is famous for including exciting things like dune buggies and jet skis.  One of the thing most people don’t know about Mazatlan is that it is home to some of the worlds best bakeries.  Baking in Mazatlan started, like most things, in homes around the city.  As the city grew, some of those bakers started selling breads and sweet breads (like donuts) called “Pan Dulce”.

As the city continued to grow, many of the bakers apprentices opened up their own bakery shops and continued the baking tradition in Mazatlan.  Now when you visit Mazatlan, it is hard to walk a single street without finding a bakery.  As you enter the bakery, you’ll notice that they’re not owned by corporations like American bakeries, they’re still owned by those same families and they still bake bread with their century old recipes.

When you visit a bakery in Mazatlan, make sure you ask the baker for his recommendation.  He has a favorite type of bread, and someone who has spent his entire life with loaves of bread knows what good bread tastes like!

Ice Skating in Mexico?

When you think of Mexico you think of the warm sun, the tropical weather, and . . . ice skating.  Well maybe you don’t associate ice skating with Mexico.  It does seem out of place.  Yet in Mexico City there is a huge open ice skating rink in the Zócalo.  In spanish say, ¿Donde esta pista del hielo? (Where is the ice skating rink?)

Okay, Okay, you can’t go in the summer time and expect there to be an ice skating rink.  That would just be ridiculous.  Yet in the winter time the center of the Zócalo is transformed into an ice skating rink.  How big?  It is reported that it is the second largest rink in the world, to Moscow’s Red Square. It is said to be larger than 20 NHL rinks.  The skating rink is open from November 29 to January 10.  Going to the ice skating rink does not cost anything if you bring your own skates, but for a small fee you can easily rent ice skates.

Travel Tips:

Mexico City has a great mass transit system.  The easiest way to get to the ice skating rink would be to take line 2 of the Metro System and stop at the Zócalo Station.

Keep in mind it hasn’t always been called Zócalo, it use to be called Plaza de la Constitución.

When you stop at the Zócalo station be sure to check out the display cases for the models of the Aztec Pyramids.   If you want to see the real pyramids go and visit Teotihucan.

The Place Where men become gods

Pyramid of the Sun

Tired of that same old vacation feeling?  Do you want to experience something adventurous?  Something that is so incredible?  Fly into Mexico City, stay in the normal resort.  Yet take a 20 mile ride to, “the place where men become gods”, Teotihucan.  Walk down the street of the dead and see two remarkable pyramids, Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon.  Don’t just stop and take a picture of one of the pyramids, but hike up it to get a breathtaking view.

Teotihucan is one of the most visited archaeologist sites in Mexico.  Teotihucan was a multicultural site that at its peak had over 100,000 people in its 51 square miles.  The first buildings were built around 200 B.C., yet Teotihucan didn’t reach its peak until between 150 B.C and 450 A.D.  The Pyramid of the Sun is the largest of the two pyramids.  A good tip is tackle the Pyramid of the Sun and see the spectacular view, and if you still fell like a “stair master”  then take on the Pyramid of the Moon.

While Teotihucan is only 20 miles away from Mexico City, you could rent a car, but I would recommend just riding with a tour bus.  Driving in Mexico is can be very stressful and your on vacation, so just jump on a tour bus.  With the tour bus also comes tour guides who can take your imagination to what life was like so many years ago.

If you go to Mexico City, please don’t pass this opportunity by.  It is worth your money, your time and peace of mind, so you don’t go back home and realize what a terrible mistake you made.  Make it your own adventure or join with strangers, either way you will not be disappointed and you’ll never forget the time you went to Teotihucan.

3 Reasons to Buy a Mazatlan Vacation Condo

For many people, vacationing in Mazatlan is a well deserved time away from normal life. If you’re one of those people who just can’t get enough of Mazatlan, consider purchasing a condo.

Here are 3 reasons to spend a little extra money and buy a vacation condo in Mazatlan.

In comparison to much of Mexico, Mazatlan is fairly priced and easy to find great properties. In a high priced area such as Cabo San Lucas, cheap vacation condos can be nearly impossible to find. When you’re looking for vacation condos in Mazatlan, “cheap” can definitely be found.

The second reason that buying a vacation condo in Mazatlan, Mexico is a good idea is for the long term and rental value. For the 40+ weeks a year that you’re not staying in your condo, you can rent it out to friends, family, and other people who are looking for a vacation in Mazatlan and don’t want to stay in a hotel. If you buy a Mazatlan vacation condo in a rental building, they will handle cleaning the carpet, changing the sheets, and doing other basic “hotel” type chores. This make renting out your vacation condo much easier on you.

The third reason to buy a Mazatlan vacation condo is to have a “home away from home”. When you buy your vacation condo in Mazatlan and visit it a few times a year, you get to know the area. You begin to find your favorite restaurants, that hidden beach alcove, and a little cantina with dancing after dinner.

Looking for things to do in Mazatlan? How about renting a dune buggy or renting a jet ski?

Mazatalan Dune Buggy Rentals

Mazatlan is known for many things including beaches, shopping, entertainment and an exciting night life.  The adventurous type would enjoy a jet ski rental in Mazatlan or a dune buggy rental on the beaches of Mazatlan. Dune buggies are a great way to enjoy an empty beach and sand hills near the beach.

You’d want to approach dune buggy rental the same way you would with jet skis, but keep in mind that finding someone to rent dune buggys in Mazatlan isn’t going to be as easy.

When you do find a dune buggy rental in Mazatlan, make sure you rent your converted Volkswagen dune buggy for enough time. If you think than an hour will be plenty, rent it for two hours. Once you get behind the wheel, you won’t want to stop driving!

When you’re planning your dune buggy rental, talk to Mazatlan locals and find out when the beaches are empty. There is nothing worse than having to drive 5 miles per hour because the beaches of Mazatlan are packed. If the beach is empty, get in your dune buggy and drive!

Before you rent your dune buggy, make sure you talk to the person renting the dune buggy to you about what happens if it breaks down. Most of these off road dune buggys are ran hard and not taken care of the way you take care of your car or truck. Many times, they’ll give you a phone number to call and they will come pick you up if you have trouble.

Mazatlan Jet Ski Rental

If you’re looking to rent a jet ski in Mazatlan, prepare to be overwhelmed.  When you first get to the beach you’ll see a lot of jet skis parked on the beach.  The jet ski vendors don’t usually have set prices so negotiating will definitely save you money on your Mazatlan jet ski rental.

Here are a few tips to getting the best price on your jet ski rental in Mazatlan.  Many times your tour guide (if you have a tour guide) will take you to someone he knows.  This usually isn’t your best deal, but if you’re not looking to hassle with the jet ski renter, go with this deal.  If you don’t mind some simple negotiation, find someone with an abundance of jet skis parked on the beach and get a price for however long you want to rent that jet ski.  If you’re a rookie, an hour provides a good amount of time and the price is usually good.

Ask the first vendor how much it will be for an hour rental.  When he gives you a price, tell him you’re going to compare and ask if that is his best price.  He will usually give you a better price when you start to leave.  No matter what the price is, go to a second vendor and tell him what the first guy said and ask him if he can beat it for the allotted time.

If he can’t beat the price, go back and rent your jet ski from the first guy at the beach in Mazatlan!  Have fun on your jet ski in Mazatlan!
